The Parthenon is a masterpiece of architecture. It is a breathing structure, a unique architectural standard featuring curves and proportions that render it not static, but a dynamic composition in space. It is the creation that integrates magnificent sculptural pieces, altogether forming what has profoundly influenced European architecture, millenia after its construction. The presence of all its components together is what defines its unique position in the art and science of architecture; it is this principle that makes necessary the reunification of all Parthenon sculptures in the original, complete set in Athens.
" the classical style par excellence " Excerpt from 'The Elgin Marbles' by Christopher Hitchens: ' According to Professor J.M. Cook in his account of the Parthenon's construction, "Practically every block in it is unique so as to fit the tilts and curvatures. Such extravagance could never be afforded again." And, as he also puts it, "the Parthenon style is the classical style par excellence ". [...] The idea is balance and symmetry, summed up in the triad of the metopes, the frieze and the pediments.' |
