World Heritage is the essence of this vision's foundations. Focusing on cultural and natural sites and monuments, World Heritage is an institution put in place to safeguard the heritage of humanity for our future generations. The World Heritage Center of UNESCO, the mission of which is explained at the official UNESCO World Heritage Center website, is to actively protect and promote World Heritage for humanity, bridging common heritage with a powerful realisation of our unity. Extending beyond physical monuments and sites, UNESCO also reaches out to protect the Intangible Heritage, taking the concept and focus of World Heritage even further.

The Acropolis of Athens, a unique monument of one of the most significant cultural milestones of human civilisation, was recognised in 1987 as a World Heritage site. In acknowledgement of its gravity and symbolic presence in human history, UNESCO has previously stated that the Acropolis can be seen as the symbol of World Heritage itself: "Illustrating the civilizations, myths and religions that flourished in Greece over a period of more than 1,000 years, the Acropolis, the site of four of the greatest masterpieces of classical Greek art - the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erectheum and the Temple of Athena Nike - can be seen as symbolizing the idea of world heritage" (UNESCO; Ref. 404).

It is precisely the beauty, depth and symbolism of the Athenian Acropolis that make its conservation and restoration imperative. Aiming to preserve World Heritage and serve the purpose of its institution, now is the time for all museums, institutions and educational establishments to collaborate to bring people and nations closer together.

Being part of a global community of natural wonders and achievements of our ancestors, no matter what race or ethnic origin, what would you choose to do for World Heritage? Humanity is inspired; we are making creative steps forward! You are part of it.

World Heritage is you growing!
